The Deeside way is the remnant of the old railway running from Aberdeen to Ballater in the Cairngorms. The path divides along its axis, seperating the north and south communities. The Design aims to bring together these communities in a place on the Deeside Way near Duthie Park. To counter the Linearity of the Path the Recreation Centre employs Diagonals at angles to the Path to encourage use of the buildings. Internally the functions encourage a community atmosphere: They operate as singular open spaces to nurture social interaction:
(In the North) there a multiple areas to sit aand relax, areas for kids to play that encourage a sense of freedom through level change between Parent and Child. (In the South)There is a communal workshop area, including kitchens and work benches for different crafts, that cateres to all kinds of user abilities. This encourages Artisan crafts and can also contribute to the Bakery on the level above it providing income for the Community as a whole: the community providing for the community. Paired with this is more seating, indoor and out, so that people can meet and socialise.
